June 14-17, 2006 - Wildflowers of the Klondike

Wildflowers were all over the Klondike Highway, but not always at the places to stop.  Here is a typical view through the windshield showing flowers on both sides of the road.

The main purple/pink color comes from this vetch (at least we think it is a vetch) - update July 15, 2006: this is wild sweet pea

Lots of blue lupine seen from the highway, but rarely at the pull offs:

This next picture is what fireweed looks like at this time of year, a small plant under about 1-1/2 feet tall.  Give it time and it will be much taller and will bloom very well.

On the way south we saw some small fireweed blooming from the road but this one getting ready to bloom is as close as we could find when stopped:
