December 14, 2011 - Everglades National Park, Part 1

After we had our picnic lunch, we drove all the way to Flamingo.  We had not been to Flamingo since October 2007.

The restaurant is open again, but has a more limited menu than in the past when we have eaten there.  We ate there in December 2003, but did not mention it in our journal.

A lone White Pelican in the bay.  It is a bit early for many White Pelicans.

An immature Black-Crowned Night Heron in the mangroves.

We were excited to see an American Crocodile in the canal, but taking photos was difficult due to the bright sun.

A Little Blue Heron by the mangroves.

Another photo of the crocodile.

Then we drove back up to the Royal Palms Visitor Center where lots of Black Vultures were circling.

Out on the Anhinga Trail we went.  The water levels were high for this time of year since there had been a lot of rain.  That means we were not going to see as many animals as we sometimes do on this trail.  But we did see some.

A turtle.

Nice flowers.

A Tri-colored Heron

A Great Blue Heron

Some kind of fish.

The above photo enhanced to show the fish in false color.
